What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient healing art based on the laws of nature, and the flow of energy (qi — life force) in the body.  Acupuncture works to harmonize the flow of energy in the body, promoting greater health and vitality, longer life and a greater sense of well-being.  Acupuncture is concerned with the whole person and promotes healing through awakening the senses, stimulating the immune system and supporting the body's innate ability to heal.

It is the oldest continuously practiced medical system in the world and is used by one-third of the world as a primary health-care system. It has become widely accepted in the United States and has been endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

What is Shiatsu or Acupressure?
An ancient Japanese technique using pressure applied to the body with thumbs, fingers and palms to manipulate and stimulate the internal life force energy.  Pressure is combined with stretching the body, so that joints are opened, muscles and tendons stretched, internal organs toned and overall vitality increased.  Relaxing and rejuvenated.  Recipients should wear loose, comfortable clothing.

What other methods do you use?

I use several non-invasive treatment techniques mainly for children and others afraid of, or sensitive to, the needles.  This includes Gua Sha and a variety of techniques inspired by Zero Balancing, Reiki and Qigong Healing.

Gua Sha is a massage technique used to break up and release energy stuck in the muscles, tendons and connective tissues.

Qigong is a gentle yet rigorous exercise that awakens and releases the body's natural self-healing capabilities.  The tools of qigong include purposeful body movements, breathing practices, self-massage, meditation and deep relaxation.

How many treatments are needed and how often?
Frequency and length of treatment varies with each individual, because what may work for one individual in 2-4 treatments may take more for others.  We will work together to determine an appropriate treatment plan.  In general, I see people weekly for the first several treatments, unless the condition is severe or acute and requires more frequent treatments to start.

Why choose Acupuncture?
People come to acupuncture for a variety of reasons.  Often, people seek out acupuncture because conventional healthcare has nothing more to offer them, or the treatment options are severe or undesirable.  Many people use acupuncture as a lifetime method of maintaining health and preventing illness.  Others use acupuncture as a complementary healing system in conjunction with other healthcare or health-promoting practices.

Acupuncture is often effective in the treatment of a wide variety of conditions, including: headaches, allergies, chronic fatigue, depression, back pain, digestive disorders, joint pain, menstrual disorders, sleeping problems, asthma, addictions and stress. In the case of life-threatening illness such as cancer, AIDS or heart disease, acupuncture can help to improve quality of life, and reduce the side effects of chemotherapy, radiation and medications.  In many cases, acupuncture in combination with other therapies can halt the progression of a disease.

Is there any research about Acupuncture?
Yes.  Research studies focusing on specific symptoms have shown that acupuncture is an effective treatment for stroke, low-back pain, headache and migraine, addiction, respiratory disease, osteoarthritis, morning sickness, female infertility, depression, menstrual pain and degenerative joint disease, among others.  An important point to remember is that these research studies focus only on symptoms, whereas acupuncture is much wider in scope, addressing the whole person.  These studies therefore cannot measure or account for some of acupuncture's most profound effects.

Do the needles hurt?
Acupuncture needles are solid and very thin -- slightly thicker than a single human hair. Most needles are inserted just beneath the skin's surface, and sensations vary. Sometimes a person feels nothing at all or perhaps a dull, momentary ache or tingling sensation. The finest quality, stainless steel, pre-sterilized, disposable needles are used.

Other questions?
I am always happy to discuss your unique situation, and answer any questions you may have about acupuncture or the other modalities that I practice.
